If you watched 19 Kids & Counting while it was still on the air, chances are high that you caught an episode (or five) that showed the family cutting hair at home. As a very frugal couple, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar made sure to cut their kids’ hair at home to save money — after all, 19 haircuts multiple times a year can really add up! But now that Joy-Anna is carrying on the tradition with her own children, people have some serious questions for her.
It all started when Joy showed off her daughter’s new hairstyle.

On Instagram, Joy posted a Reel that showed 3-year-old Evelyn sitting on a stool in the kitchen, who was all smiles as her mom showed the whole process of her haircut.
In the end, Evelyn was left with shoulder-length hair that she was really happy with, if that clip of her grinning at herself in the mirror at the end of the video is anything to go by.
One person questioned why Joy wouldn’t use a professional to cut her daughter’s hair if she could afford it, and others were worried that Evy’s curls weren’t being properly cared for.
“She’s got beautiful curly hair and really it needs looking after by someone that actually knows how to cut curly hair. You will just cut the curls out,” one commenter wrote.
Others thought Joy did a great job.

The same week, Joy showed off a much shorter cut, too, right before her family went to California to visit big sister Jinger Duggar .
It looks like they were probably freshening up their looks before their big trip — after all, it’s quite a hike from Arkansas to the West Coast!
Joy doesn’t seem to be letting the criticism bother her.

Instead, as far as we can tell, she’s busy having a blast with her sister, brother-in-law Jeremy, and their kids, Felicity and Evangeline.
Besides, kitchen haircuts have been the law of the land in Duggarville for many, many years, and Joy’s not the only one to have adopted this tradition for her own children. This likely won’t be the last time we see a member of her fam share a video like this!
